Switch Characteristic Tester
The switch characteristic tester (also commonly referred to in the industry as the high-voltage switch dynamic characteristic tester or circuit breaker mechanical characteristic tester) is a core intelligent instrument for the maintenance and testing of high-voltage switches in power systems. It is mainly used to measure the mechanical parameters of various voltage levels of vacuum, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), low-oil, and multi-oil high-voltage switches, equivalent to conducting a comprehensive "mechanical physical examination" for high-voltage circuit breakers to ensure their control and protection functions in the power system are foolproof.
Core Working Principle and Test Items
The tester uses photoelectric pulse technology, high-speed data sampling (DSP chip processing), and precise speed/distance sensors to automatically collect and calculate all mechanical characteristic data during a single closing or opening operation of the circuit breaker. Its core test items include:
Time Parameters: Inherent opening and closing times of 12 break contacts, reclosure time, and maximum non-simultaneity of opening/closing (within phases and between phases).
Speed Parameters: Just-separating and just-closing speeds, average and maximum opening/closing speeds, and the ability to plot speed-distance curves.
Travel Parameters: Switch opening distance (total travel), overtravel (contact travel), overshoot travel, and rebound amplitude.
Bounce Parameters: Closing bounce time and bounce count, opening rebound amplitude, used to evaluate the stability of contact engagement and arc wear.
Electrical and Coil Parameters: Current waveform, current value, and coil resistance of opening/closing coils; some comprehensive testers also integrate the measurement function of main circuit contact resistance (100A DC voltage drop method).
Main Application Scenarios
The switch characteristic tester is widely used in factory inspection, acceptance testing, and preventive maintenance testing of various high-voltage switchgear equipment:
High-Voltage Circuit Breakers: Mechanical characteristic debugging and fault diagnosis of vacuum circuit breakers, SF6 circuit breakers, and oil circuit breakers (multi-oil/low-oil).
GIS Combined Apparatus: On-site installation and regular maintenance of gas-insulated fully enclosed combined apparatus.
Other Switchgear: Action characteristic testing of high-voltage contactors, disconnectors, load switches, etc.
Key Selection Indicators
When facing many models on the market, the following core indicators should be focused on during selection:
Table

Indicator Description Selection Suggestion
Number of Break Contact Acquisition Channels Number of break contacts that can be measured simultaneously For conventional three-phase circuit breakers, choose 6 or 12 channels; if simultaneous testing of main and auxiliary contacts is required, it is recommended to choose a model that supports 12 metal contact break channels.
Built-in DC Operating Power Supply The opening/closing drive voltage provided by the instrument itself Prefer models with DC 20~270V continuously adjustable and short-term output current ≥20A to meet the needs of various circuit breaker coil actions and low-voltage action tests.
Sensor Configuration and Accuracy Core components for measuring travel and speed Equipped with linear sensors, rotary sensors, etc. Pay attention to time resolution (recommended 0.01ms level) and travel resolution (0.1mm level) to ensure precise capture of micro-bounce and speed changes.
Anti-Interference Capability Stability in complex on-site electromagnetic environments Substation sites have high interference; it is necessary to choose equipment with excellent electromagnetic compatibility that can operate reliably in the strong electromagnetic environment of 500kV substations.
Data Analysis and Expansion Software functions and data storage Prefer models that support waveform simultaneous display, envelope comparison analysis, vibration frequency analysis, and have large-capacity storage and USB/PC online export functions.
