Zinc Oxide Arrester Tester
The Zinc Oxide Arrester Tester (also known as Resistive Current Tester, MOA Live Line Tester) is the core detection equipment for daily inspection and preventive testing in substations. It is mainly used to measure parameters such as total current, resistive current and its harmonics, capacitive current, power loss, and phase difference of zinc oxide arresters, thereby accurately determining whether the valve discs are damp, aged, or deteriorated. It is a key instrument for ensuring power grid lightning protection safety.
Core Working Principle
During normal operation, a zinc oxide arrester mainly carries capacitive current. When the valve discs become damp or aged, the resistive current component increases significantly. The core task of the tester is to accurately separate the resistive current from the total leakage current.
Mainstream technical routes include:
Technical Route Principle Advantages Applicable Scenarios
Compensation Method (Fundamental Wave Method) Collect PT secondary voltage as reference, calculate resistive current fundamental wave through phase difference Strong anti-interference, high precision, mainstream solution 110kV and above substations
Third Harmonic Method Measure third harmonic current to deduce resistive current Suitable for gapless MOA Specific types of arresters
Current Method (No PT Mode) Set angle or calculate voltage reference through software algorithm No PT wiring required, convenient operation No PT signal or quick troubleshooting
Currently, the compensation method is the industry standard solution. Combined with digital filtering and Fourier harmonic analysis technology, it can effectively eliminate system harmonics and on-site electromagnetic interference.
Selection Core: Match by Voltage Level and Testing Scenario
1. Voltage Level and Precision Requirements
Application Scenario Recommended Type Precision Requirement
Daily inspection of 35kV and below distribution stations Total current type or basic resistive current type ±5% is sufficient
Preventive testing of 110kV~220kV substations Resistive current type (supports fundamental wave separation) ±2%~±5%
500kV and above/UHV stations Harmonic analysis type (supports 3rd~9th harmonics) Within ±2%, with edge phase correction
Electric Power Research Institute arbitration/metrology calibration High precision type ±0.5%~±1%
Key Tip: 110kV and above substations must choose resistive current or harmonic analysis type. Total current type cannot capture early insulation deterioration signals.
2. Synchronization Method (Determines On-site Efficiency)
Wired Synchronization (PT Secondary Side) Directly take reference voltage from PT secondary terminals Highest precision, most stable Requires wiring, limited distance (≤40m)
Wireless Synchronization Voltage collector wirelessly transmits reference signal No long-distance wiring required, safe and efficient Transmission distance needs to be ≥1000m to be practical
Induction Plate/Electric Field Induction Non-contact induction of electric field to obtain voltage Completely wiring-free, most convenient Slightly lower precision, susceptible to electric field distribution
No PT Mode (Current Method) Software algorithm calculates voltage reference Usable when no PT signal Lowest precision, only for quick troubleshooting
Large substations or outdoor stations should prioritize wireless synchronization (transmission distance ≥1000m). Indoor compact stations can choose wired synchronization.
3. Number of Channels
Single Channel: Phase-by-phase testing, low cost, suitable for small stations
Three-channel Synchronization: Complete three-phase measurement with one wiring, efficiency improved by over 60%, and equipped with automatic inter-phase interference compensation function, essential for 110kV and above stations

Usage Precautions
PT secondary side wiring must be equipped with a fuse (0.1A) to prevent misoperation from damaging the PT
The arrester grounding down conductor must be reliably connected, and the current clamp clamping position must be secure
Maintain a safe distance during live testing, prioritize wireless mode, reduce high-voltage leads
Pay attention to phase sequence during three-phase testing. Incorrect wiring will cause phase difference calculation errors
Confirm the arrester counter is normal before measurement. Abnormal counters will affect current acquisition
Enable anti-interference mode in strong electromagnetic environments, and take multiple measurements for averaging if necessary
After testing, remove the current line first, then the voltage line, to prevent induced voltage from causing injury
